I will have to revert to posting on the end of last years blog because the new site is too hard to use. Please stand by while I get this one updated.

  • Almost heaven West Virginia…..

Left Harrisburg Pennsylvania this morning after the blizzard. They shut the interstate to trucks after midnight and issued storm warning for an inch of wet snow. We got quiet a laugh over that.

Traveled through most of West Virginia today and are staying at a cracker Barrel restaurant for the night outside Huntington WV. For those who don’t remember the Cracker Barrel is our favorite restaurant which makes old fashioned breakfasts, dinners and allows camping in their parking lot.

While traveling we on the interstate we could see up the hollows of rural West Virginia. There were a mix of old trailers, shacks and brand new homes, quite a contrast in life styles.

Passed through Cumberland Maryland which was a old factory town with dozens of old red brick factories. Most were restored into modern buildings of all sorts, the skyline along a hill side was pretty cool. The buildings had the Market Square and Marysville feel to them, there were also old run down red brick apartments to match.

The state was similar to Pennsylvania as it crossed perpendicular to the Blue-ridge mountains so you were either going up a hill or descending one. Pennsylvania gets quite tedious but this was different because of the settlements in the hollows which provided lots to see. Its all hard wood except for a few pines in the hollows, lots of maple sugar bushes could be seen. I’m sure the fall colors would rival what New Brunswick could offer.

This is a scale replica we saw of a statue dedicated to fallen road workers in West Virginia. It was pretty impressive and I wished we had time to travel to the city where it original stands, it will go on my bucket list of things to see later. Made me feel good about never having lost any colleagues it my 42 year career as a road worker.

PS – The first two posts were using the phone and it just doesn’t work well for quick posts so I will stick to doing these on our PC in the evenings

I will leave you with this song as we settle down for a quiet evening in the camper
